Rotary’s Fight Against Polio: A Personal Reflection

Rotary’s Fight Against Polio: A Personal Reflection

As I sat among fellow Rotarians at the Green Rotarian Conclave at Mohan Gardens, Korattur last December, PDG Rtn. ISAK Nazar’s powerful speech on “Rotary’s Contribution to Polio” struck a personal chord with me. As a medical microbiologist, I found myself deeply moved by Rotary’s remarkable journey in fighting this devastating disease.

The story of Rotary’s polio eradication efforts is one of unwavering dedication. It began with a simple yet profound moment in 1979 when then RI President Clem Renouf read about smallpox eradication during a flight. This sparked a vision that would eventually transform into one of the most significant public health initiatives in history.

What particularly resonates with me is how this global mission manifests in our own backyard here in Chennai. Our district’s Rotarians have been instrumental in India’s polio-free status, achieved in 2014. I vividly remember the last reported case in our country – January 13, 2011, in Howrah, West Bengal. This milestone wasn’t just a statistical achievement; it represented countless hours of dedicated service by Rotarians who travelled to remote areas, ensuring no child was left behind.

The introduction of both OPV and IPV in India’s routine immunization program since February 2016 has been crucial in maintaining our polio-free status. As someone who understands the science behind these vaccines, I’m particularly impressed by how Rotary has effectively combined medical knowledge with grassroots action.

Bill Gates’ words ring true when he said, “The world would not be where it is without Rotary, and it won’t get where it needs to go without Rotary.” This statement perfectly encapsulates what I witnessed at our district’s immunization drives – Rotarians working tirelessly, going nook and corner, ensuring every child receives those vital drops.

The latest global data from 2024 shows that while we’ve made tremendous progress, our work isn’t done. Wild poliovirus type 1 remains in Pakistan and Afghanistan, with 51 new cases reported. This reminds us that until polio is eradicated everywhere, children everywhere remain at risk.

What makes me proud as an Ann is seeing how Rotary has mobilized unprecedented resources – raising $1.9 billion since the mid-1980s, with $885 million coming from the Gates Foundation’s matching grants. But beyond the numbers, it’s the personal commitment of every Rotarian that truly makes the difference.

As we continue our fight against polio, I’m inspired by how our district’s Rotarians embody the spirit of ‘Service Above Self.’ Whether through fundraising, awareness campaigns, or direct involvement in immunization drives, we’re part of a historic mission. Together, we’re not just fighting a disease; we’re building a legacy of hope for future generations.
