Oru Idli Story

Oru Idli Story

Ever wondered how a humble South Indian dish can inspire Rotary service? We sat down with our
DG Rtn. Mahaveer Bothra to chat about his favorite food—idli—and its surprising connection to Rotary values.

Why idli, Bothra Ji?
Bothra Ji: Why not idli? It’s like the ultimate comfort food—soft, fluffy, and just the right amount of energy. Plus, it’s like a warm hug from South India.

What makes idli your go-to dish?
Bothra Ji: Idli is versatile, just like Rotarians! You can have it for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. And it’s always there to lift your spirits, much like our service projects.

Is there a secret to making the perfect idli?
Bothra Ji: Ah, the secret lies in the fermentation, my friend. Just like how patience and dedication ferment into impactful Rotary projects, a well-fermented batter yields perfect idlis.

How do you relate your love for idli to Rotary values?
Bothra Ji: Idli, much like Rotary, is all about bringing people together. It’s simple yet impactful, proving that small things, when done right, can make a big difference—just like our motto, “Service Above Self.”

What’s your favorite idli pairing?
Bothra Ji: Sambar and coconut chutney, no doubt! It’s a harmonious combo, similar to how different Rotary clubs work together harmoniously to achieve greater goals.

If you could compare idli to a Rotary project, which one would it be?
Bothra Ji: Our PolioPlus initiative! Just as idli is a staple in South Indian cuisine, the PolioPlus project is a staple in Rotary’s mission. Both aim to provide something fundamental—nutrition and health.

Any final thoughts on idli and Rotary?
Bothra Ji: Idli is a reminder that simplicity and consistency can lead to greatness. Rotary, through its simple yet consistent efforts in service, transforms lives. So, next time you have an idli, think of the positive impact we create, one step—or idli—at a time.
