The Flight of the Golden Sparrow: DG Bothra’s Vision for Women in Rotary

The Flight of the Golden Sparrow: DG Bothra’s Vision for Women in Rotary

As Rotary continues its journey towards greater inclusivity, one leader stands out for his unwavering commitment to women’s empowerment – District Governor Rtn. Mahaveer Bothra. With his upcoming mega-event Golden Sparrow set to redefine the role of women in Rotary, I had the privilege of sitting down with him to discuss his vision, values, and how he sees the future of women in our organization.

1. DG Bothra, you have always been a strong advocate for women’s empowerment. What has shaped your views on this?

Mahaveer Bothra: It all starts at home, my friend! My mother, Sridar Bai, has been my guiding star. She taught me that a woman doesn’t just build a family—she builds a legacy. My wife, Jayashree, exemplifies strength, handling both family and Rotary leadership with grace. My daughters, Navitha and Shilpa, are proving their mettle in the business world, managing our diamond jewellery business alongside their cousins. When you are surrounded by strong women, respecting and empowering them is not a choice—it’s a way of life. In Rotary, I see the same potential, and it’s our duty to give women the platform they deserve. When women lead, communities thrive, and that’s the change I want to see in Rotary.

2. Rotary International emphasizes DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion). How do you see this policy transforming Rotary?

Mahaveer Bothra: DEI isn’t just a policy—it’s a mindset shift! Gone are the days when Rotary was a ‘men’s club.’ Today, women are not just participating but leading with excellence. From club presidents to governors, their presence is making Rotary more dynamic. I strongly believe that true service happens when we represent the entire society, not just half of it! The more diverse our leadership, the more impactful our projects. Rotary is evolving, and I’m proud to be part of this transformation. It’s not just about inviting women to join; it’s about ensuring they have a seat at the table, a voice in decision-making, and opportunities to shape the future of Rotary.

3. Speaking of transformation, how do you see the role of women in Rotary today compared to a decade ago?

Mahaveer Bothra: It’s like comparing a caterpillar to a butterfly! Few years ago, women in Rotary were often in the background. Today, they are at the forefront, leading change, driving projects, and inspiring new generations. It’s not just about inclusion; it’s about recognition. Women bring empathy, strategy, and resilience to Rotary, and their presence makes us stronger. I say, let’s hand them the microphone, the gavel, and the future! The energy, creativity, and problem-solving abilities of women have propelled Rotary into a new era. The question is no longer should women lead—it’s how many more leadership positions can we open for them?

4. Tell us about Golden Sparrow. What inspired you to organize this mega-event?

Mahaveer Bothra: Ah, Golden Sparrow—my dream project! Just as India was once the golden sparrow of the world, women are the golden force of Rotary. On April 19, we will witness history with over 2,000 incredible women from across Zone 5 coming together for a grand celebration of their impact. This is not just an event; it’s a movement. Women in Rotary deserve to be celebrated, empowered, and connected. I want them to leave Golden Sparrow feeling unstoppable! This event will feature thought-provoking sessions, inspiring speakers, and a space for networking like never before. It’s a tribute to every woman who has ever stepped up to lead and to those who will shape Rotary’s future.

5. This follows Kalangarai Vilakku and Valar Pirai, both groundbreaking events. How is Golden Sparrow different?

Mahaveer Bothra: Every great film needs sequels, right? Kalangarai Vilakku celebrated past leaders, Valar Pirai nurtured new Rotarians, and now Golden Sparrow will elevate women. It’s bigger, bolder, and built entirely around women in Rotary. Think of it as a powerhouse of networking, learning, and celebration—plus, it’s going to be a full-day carnival! Trust me, this is one event no one should miss. From engaging panel discussions to high-energy cultural performances, Golden Sparrow will be an unforgettable experience. It’s about creating a ripple effect where empowered women go on to empower others.

6. How has your wife, Jayashree Bothra, influenced your leadership journey in Rotary?

Mahaveer Bothra: Behind every successful man is a woman who knows when to smile and when to remind him to eat on time! Jayashree has been my rock, my advisor, and my biggest supporter. As the District First Lady, she is leading the Partners Committee brilliantly. I watch her empower women every day, and it inspires me to do more. She proves that leadership isn’t about titles—it’s about impact. Her ability to bring people together, organize events, and inspire action is remarkable. She has shown that leadership isn’t just about making decisions—it’s about making a difference.

7. You always speak highly of your daughters. How do you see them as examples of empowered women?

Mahaveer Bothra: Oh, they are my greatest pride! Navitha, with her sharp business mind, and Shilpa, though a doctor by qualification, has chosen to focus entirely on our family business alongside her sister and cousins. They challenge norms, think big, and work hard. Seeing them take charge in our diamond jewellery business and carve a niche in a competitive industry makes me believe that the future of women in leadership is unstoppable. They have taught me that leadership isn’t about gender—it’s about capability, vision, and perseverance. Watching them grow into confident business leaders assures me that the next generation is ready to take on the world.

12. Finally, what’s your message to the 2,000+ women coming to Golden Sparrow?

Mahaveer Bothra: Ladies, this is your moment. Step in with confidence, network like never before, and leave with a fire in your heart. You are the Golden Sparrow—powerful, graceful, and ready to soar. Let’s make history together! More than just a celebration, Golden Sparrow is a platform for women to connect, learn, and inspire each other. My message is simple—embrace this opportunity to grow, lead, and uplift one another. Rotary is not just a service organization; it’s a launchpad for change-makers. I can’t wait to see the impact this event will create, and I hope every woman walks away knowing that the sky is not the limit—it’s just the beginning!
